Few Broadway shows do this better than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With music by Henry Frieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took Broadway by storm in 1981. Based loosely on the rise and fall of R&amp;B headline acts like the Supremes and James Brown, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pays homage to the incredible soul music of the 60\u2019s and 70\u2019s. With 13 Tony Award nominations, six Tony wins, a successful 2005 revival, and a motion picture to its credit, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has proven it\u2019s a theatrical powerhouse. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As befits a show about the music industry, the music in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is almost a character itself. With 21 songs in the first act and another 18 in the second, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dreamgirls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is nearly operatic in scope. The characters are no joke either. The role of Effie has catapulted the likes of Jennifer Holliday and Jennifer Hudson sky high. Though the girls have humble origins, there\u2019s no reason you can\u2019t bring some spectacle to your opening scene. The song, written by Effie\u2019s brother C.C., is guaranteed to get the audience&#8217;s toes tapping. The girls fail to win the contest, but catch the ear of wannabe music manager Curtis, who is eager to put his car salesmanship skills to better use. Curtis lands the girls their first gig as backup singers to almost-famous R&amp;B star Jimmy Early. Despite a rocky start, the new group begins to take off<\/span>. They record <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C.C.\u2019s new tune \u201cCadillac Car\u201d, which is promptly stolen by another group. Their next hit, \u201cSteppin\u2019 to the Bad Side\u201d, finally hits the pop charts, thanks to some tenacity and payola. Effie is furious at being sidelined, but lets Curtis convince her that they\u2019re \u201cFamily\u201d and nothing will ever drive them apart.
